History

The Currituck County Library at Barco was the first of the current three facilities to be built. The original building was constructed in 1975. An addition was made in 1994, bringing the library to almost 10,000 square feet. 

Collection

The Barco library is the main library for Currituck County. It holds the largest collection of books and several special collections. These include:

  • the Joseph P Knapp Collection, which contains over 1,000 historical and genealogical volumes covering Currituck County, our surrounding Counties, Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, census compilations, military compilations, and more
  • the Marion Fiske Welch Photography Collection, comprised of over 600 photographs chronicling life in Currituck County
  • a vertical file collection which contains over 500 files representing long-established families in the county, as well as other subjects of interest relating to Currituck County
  • digital reproductions of over 70 family Bibles of relevance to the area
  • a collection of papers and correspondence related to the Currituck Shooting Club in Corolla
  • a collection of Dudley & Ida Bagley's manuscripts, photographs, and other ephemera relating to the family
  • a two-volume typescript and bound copy of Henry Beasley Ansell's manuscript The History of Currituck County and Tales of Knotts Island (c. 1912, the first known such historiy of the county to be produced)

  • 2 computers for genealogy research
  • a color photocopier that scans to portable storage devices
  • Wi-Fi access throughout the building
